In this crochet hat we’ll be using the cluster stitch that will give it a nice and unique texture and look. The advantage of this particular pattern is that you can make it any size you like, for babies, children and adults. Choose any kind of yarn that you think is suitable for crocheting a hat with medium thickness.

Special terms:
We’ll be using two forms of the cluster stitch:
Beginning cluster: Ch 2, 2 dc same stitch. We’ll be using it at the beginning of each round of the second part of the pattern.
Normal cluster: 3 dc cluster.
Notes:
The beginning chains of this pattern should be an even number.
It’s better to make the hat a little bit taller than your measurement.
All slip stitches in the pattern should be worked on both loops.
How to take your measurement:
There are three way to take them…
1. Trying on the hat as you work.
2. Take the circumference and height for the head or measure another hat with the size you want.
3. Use a crochet hats chart like this one here.
Directions:
Part one (hat rim):
R 1: Make an even number of chains that match you hat circumference, sl st in the first chain. Ch 1, sc BL same st, sc BL across, sl st (both loops) in first sc. Try on or measure this part and make sure that is matches your circumference measurement.
R 2: Ch 1, sc BL same st, sc BL across, sl st (both loops) in first sc.
Repeat (R 2) one or two times. Do not FO. It’s a good time to check your work measurement or trying it on.
Part two (hat top):
R 1: Make a beginning cluster (ch 2, 2 dc cluster) same stitch, ch 1, *skip next st, 3 dc cluster next st, ch 1* repeat until the end of the round. Sl st in first cluster.
R 2: Sl st in next chain space, make a beginning cluster (ch 2, 2 dc cluster) in same chain space, ch 1, *3 dc cluster next chain space, ch 1* repeat until the end of the round. Sl st in the first cluster we made.
Repeat R 2 until you reach the height you desire. Take the hat measurement or try it on to make sure.
Finishing:
When you reach the height you desire FO leaving a long tail for sewing the upper part of the hat. Using a needle sew the upper part to close it. Secure the yarn and weave in ends.
Your hat is ready. You can decorate it the way you like. (We’ll be sharing the leaves crochet patter soon). Edit: the crochet leaves pattern is up, you can read it here.
Or you can leave as it is without any kind of decorations.
