I’m sharing Ramadan Lantern crochet pattern since Ramadan is around the corner. You can use it as an actual lantern by using a small candle or just as decoration or gifts container. The pattern is easy to adjust to the size you like, note that you’ll need to use a glass or plastic jar or container for this pattern.
Designer: Nada
Skill level: Easy/Intermediate
Size: Free and easy to adjust
Materials:
Any kind of yarn with small to medium thickness with suitable crochet hook
For the light green and gray lantern I used about 1 mm thick cotton thread with 2 mm crochet hook
For the red lantern I used 3 mm thick yarn with 5.5 crochet hook
Needle
Glass or plastic jar (See notes)
Thin ribbon with color that suits the yarn
Terms:
MR – Magic ring
st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
BL – back loop only
Notes:
– Make sure to use a glass jar if you want to use it as lantern, other than that you can use glass or plastic one.
– I’m adding a lid pattern if you want to use it as a gifts container.
– Follow the red texts to adjust the size.
Directions:
Lantern Bottom:
Rnd 1: MR, ch 3 (count as dc), 11 dc in the ring. Sl st in 3rd ch. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc same st, 2 dc each st. Sl st in 3rd ch. (24 dc)
Rnd 3: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc same st, dc next st, *2 dc, dc* repeat until the end of the round. (36 dc)
Rnd 4: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc same st, dc, dc, *2 dc, dc, dc* repeat until the end of the round. (48 dc)
Make more or less rounds to match your jar bottom. It has to be a little bit larger than the jar bottom.
Lantern Sides:
Rnd 1: Ch 3 (count as dc), dc BL each st around.
Rnd 2: To make the sides strands, *sl st, ch 11 (more or less, see below), sc 2nd ch from hook, sc down all chains, skip next st, sc next 4 sts* repeat until the end of the round. Sl st at the end, FO and weave in ends. We’re not finished, complete next step.
Make more or less chains in Rnd 2 to make the right size for the strands that matches your jar. It has to be a little bit shorter (1/4″) than the jar side length.
Lantern Top:
Rnd 1: Attach your yarn to the top of one of the side’s strands with sl st, *ch 5, sl st on top of the next strand* repeat until the end of the round.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, *6 sc next ch space* repeat until the end of the round. Sl st next st.
Lantern Holder:
Make a number of chains the length you want for your holder then sl st on the other side of the top. FO and weave in ends.
Lantern Lid: (optional)
Repeat same steps you did for the lantern bottom and first round only of the sides. FO and weave in ends.
Finishing:
If you’re using the lid use the ribbon to tighten the lid by weaving it in the side part of the lid and make a knot or a bow.
Your Lantern is Finished! I hope you like it.
Edit!
You can add flowers to the lantern as you see in the pic. Follow the steps in here.
