This crochet pattern is very easy to make. I used 2mm thick cotton rope that I found in a hardware store, but you can use or experiment with any kind of yarn you like or have.
I used the FL to make the stitches more flat. Also used hdc stitch for faster results with less gaps comparing with dc or tr.
You can easily modify the finishing size by making more or less chains at the beginning chain. Also by making more or less rows. Just make sure you end up with a square.

3.5 – 4 mm crochet hook
Needle (to weave in ends and sew the buttons)

Terms:
FL – Front loop only
st – stitch
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
Directions:
Row 1: Ch 18, hdc 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across. (16 hdc)
Row 2: Ch 2 (does not count as hdc), hdc in FL in each st across. (16 hdc)
Row 3-10: Repeat row 2. FO leaving 5″ to sew the button.
Finishing:
Sew on button or any kind of accessories you like at the corner of the coaster. Weave in ends.
