Crochet hat using sprouts stitch. This hat can be made to any size easily. I used thick yarn for chunky and fast work.

Medium to thick yarn with suitable crochet hook

st – stitch
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
sc – single crochet
hdc – half double crochet
FPdc – front post double crochet
tr – treble crochet
hdc2tog – 2 half double crochet together
BL – back loop only
Special terms
FPC – front post cluster stitch. The cluster stitch we’re using is a 3 treble crochet.
Notes
The hat is divided in two continues parts. First part is the lower rim that needs to fits the head circumference and will be worked in rows.
Second part is worked in rounds. First round will be worked in the edges of the first part rows as you’ll see in the pics.
Directions
Make sure to check the special terms before you start.
Part one
This part needs to fits the head circumference. Number of rows needs to be multiples of 6.
R 1: Ch 6, sc 2nd ch from the hook, sc each ch. (5 sc)
R 2: Ch 1, turn, sc BL in each st. (5 sc)
Remaining rows: Repeat row 2 until you’ve the size you like. Number of rows must be multiples of 6.
Joining the edges: Ch 1, sl st using one loop of each edge (BL of first edge with one loop of the other edge). Complete working slip stitches until you join the two edges together. Make sure of the size before going to next step. Do NOT FO.
Part two
This part will be worked in rounds.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, now we’ll work in the edges of part one rows (see pics). Hdc same row edge, hdc in each row edge, before you join make sure the number of stitch matches the number of part one rows. Sl st in first hdc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, hdc same st, hdc, FPdc, *hdc in each of next 5 sts, FPdc* repeat until you have 3 stitches remaining, hdc in each one of them, sl st in first hdc.
Rnd 3: Repeat round 2
Rnd 4: Ch 1, hdc same st, hdc, FPC, *hdc in each of next 5 sts, FPC* repeat until you have 3 stitches remaining, hdc in each one of them, sl st in first hdc.
Rnd 5: Ch 1, hdc same st, hdc in each of next 4 sts, FPdc, *hdc in each of next 5 sts, FPdc* repeat until the end of the round, sl st in first hdc.
Rnd 6: Repeat rounds 5
Rnd 7: Ch 1, hdc same st, hdc in each of next 4 sts, FPC, *hdc in each of next 5 sts, FPC* repeat until the end of the round, sl st in first hdc.
Remaining rounds: Repeat from round 2 to 7 until you have the length you like for your hat. In last repeat you stop in round 4 repeat or round 7 repeat.
Round before last: Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 4 sts* repeat until the end of the round, sl st in first hdc.
Last round: Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc in each of next 3 sts* repeat until the end of the round, sl st in first hdc. Make sure of the size before fininshing.
Finishing
FO leaving long tail for sewing.
Using the needle, sew the upper gap close tight then FO and weave in ends.
Add pompom if you like.
